AWWA Dementia Day Care Centre Transformed from a HDB Void Deck

The AWWA Dementia Day Care Centre, designed by D’Perception Ritz, exemplifies how thoughtful interior design can significantly enhance the well-being of individuals with dementia. Transformed from a Housing and Development Board (HDB) void deck, the centre integrates research-driven design elements to create a comforting and familiar environment for its users.

Design Philosophy:

Understanding that individuals with dementia often retain implicit memories—subconscious recollections of past experiences—the design team incorporated familiar elements to serve as memory cues, thereby aiding in the maintenance or enhancement of functional abilities. This approach aligns with the centre’s goal to maximize patient comfort and create a sense of familiarity within the new environment.

Retro Theme and Memory Activation:

A prominent retro theme runs throughout the centre, intended to evoke memories and establish a sense of the familiar. This thematic choice is evident in various design aspects:

  • Feature Wall: A special wall showcasing items from the past partitions the multi-purpose space from the entertainment lounge, offering a private corner within an open area. This design reflects the aim to create communal spaces that still feel personal to each resident.

  • Furniture Selection: The use of retro ‘kopitiam’ (traditional coffee shop) tables and chairs in the dining area reinforces the nostalgic ambiance, providing residents with a comforting and recognizable setting.

Biomorphic Design Elements:

The centre features biomorphic ceiling designs—organic shapes and forms inspired by nature—that contribute to a soothing atmosphere. These elements, combined with strong, contrasting colors, assist in spatial orientation and wayfinding, which are crucial for individuals with dementia.

Vertical Indoor Garden:

An indoor vertical garden serves as both an aesthetic feature and a functional space for gardening activities. This living wall not only enhances air quality but also provides sensory stimulation and therapeutic engagement for the residents.

Recognition:

In acknowledgment of its innovative and empathetic design, the AWWA Dementia Day Care Centre was awarded the Singapore Good Design Mark in 2015.

Through these carefully considered design choices, D’Perception Ritz has created an environment that supports the unique needs of individuals with dementia, promoting comfort, familiarity, and engagement.
