A Black and white colonial bungalow gets a makeover
Our client fell in love with this house in the nature but was concerned about the barebones amenities and the dysfunctional rooms. While most of the rooms were generously sized, there was a lack of storage and the house had not been updated for the busy modern day life. With only 600 Black and White Houses remaining, our client could not pass up this opportunity to live in a house from an era when the British military had a presence in Singapore. Fortunately, because the house was basic, the rent was correspondingly reasonable. Our client was thus able to allocate rental savings to a full scale renovation.
Our designers were cognisant of the necessity to modernise the colonial bungalow whilst keeping the character of a Black and White House. The walls of the main floor were kept white to reflect the airiness afforded by 3 large collapsible wood framed glass doors and low hung windows. The lush greenery surrounding the house remained the highlight for the living, dining and family rooms. The kitchen was redesigned to be outfitted with high end appliances and rebuilt with handcrafted Shaker style cabinetry for the gourmet cook. Upstairs, colours were incorporated in the bedrooms as the windows were positioned rather high and were not as conducive for the featuring of biophilia. The result is a soothing master bedroom in elegant grey and a fun boy’s room in vibrant blue. The client has a penchant for designer lights and had a ball conferencing with us and handpicking black lighting in an array of styles for each of the different rooms and areas.
The renovation and makeover were completed on schedule, earning a great sigh of relief from our client. Check out the before and after video of this makeover below.
